Psalm 132
Psalm 132 reflects on God’s covenant with David and the promise that his descendants would reign on the throne of Israel. It also highlights David’s devotion to establishing a place for God’s presence and celebrates the Lord’s choice of Zion as His dwelling place. The psalm ends with a reaffirmation of God’s promises to David and the hope that these promises will be fulfilled.
Psalm 132:1-5 (NKJV)
1 Lord, remember David and all his afflictions;
2 How he swore to the Lord, and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
3 “Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house, or go up to the comfort of my bed;
4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids,
5 Until I find a place for the Lord, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
These verses recall David’s commitment to finding a permanent dwelling for the Ark of the Covenant, which represented God’s presence. David’s deep desire to honor God was so strong that he made a vow to prioritize building a place for God above his own comfort. This reflects his zeal for God’s honor and his determination to establish a place for divine worship.
Psalm 132:6-10 (NKJV)
6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of the woods.
7 Let us go into His tabernacle; let us worship at His footstool.
8 Arise, O Lord, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength.
9 Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let Your saints shout for joy.
10 For Your servant David’s sake, do not turn away the face of Your Anointed.
These verses refer to the discovery of the Ark of the Covenant, likely alluding to its journey from the fields to Jerusalem. The psalmist calls for God to arise and take His place in the temple, where His presence is symbolized by the Ark. The prayer is also for the priests to serve righteously and for God to continue His favor toward the anointed king, for David’s sake.
Psalm 132:11-12 (NKJV)
11 The Lord has sworn in truth to David; He will not turn from it: “I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body.
12 If your sons will keep My covenant and My testimony which I shall teach them, their sons also shall sit upon your throne forevermore.”
God’s promise to David is emphasized here: one of David’s descendants would always sit on the throne if they remained faithful to God’s covenant. This covenantal promise was conditional on the obedience of David’s descendants, highlighting the importance of faithfulness for the continuation of the dynasty.
Psalm 132:13-16 (NKJV)
13 For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place:
14 “This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly bless her provision; I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.”
These verses describe God’s selection of Zion (Jerusalem) as His eternal dwelling place. God promises to bless the city with abundant provision, to meet the needs of the poor, and to provide salvation for the priests. This declaration reinforces Zion as the central place for worship and God’s continued presence among His people.
Psalm 132:17-18 (NKJV)
17 There I will make the horn of David grow; I will prepare a lamp for My Anointed.
18 His enemies I will clothe with shame, but upon Himself His crown shall flourish.”
God reaffirms His covenant with David by promising that his line will grow strong, like a horn, a symbol of power. The “lamp” for the anointed one refers to the enduring presence of a descendant of David on the throne, while his enemies will be put to shame. The crown represents the success and prosperity of the king in the line of David, ensuring that God’s promise will be fulfilled.
