Psalm 148
Psalm 148 is a hymn of praise, calling on all of creation to worship and glorify the Lord. The psalmist invites every being and element of creation, both in the heavens and on the earth, to praise God for His majesty and sovereignty. The chapter underscores that everything in existence owes its praise to the Creator, from celestial beings to earthly creatures and people of all ranks.
Psalm 148:1-10 (NKJV)
1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights!
2 Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts!
3 Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light!
4 Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens!
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For He commanded and they were created.
6 He also established them forever and ever;
He made a decree which shall not pass away.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth,
You great sea creatures and all the depths;
8 Fire and hail, snow and clouds;
Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
9 Mountains and all hills;
Fruitful trees and all cedars;
10 Beasts and all cattle;
Creeping things and flying fowl;
The psalmist begins by calling for praise from the heavens, angels, sun, moon, stars, and the waters above. He emphasizes that God created all these elements by His command, and they exist to glorify Him. The heavenly bodies and celestial beings are sustained by God's eternal decree. On the earth, every part of creation, from the sea creatures to the weather and even animals, are called to praise God, recognizing His power and the natural order He established.
Psalm 148:11-14 (NKJV)
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples;
Princes and all judges of the earth;
12 Both young men and maidens;
Old men and children.
13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For His name alone is exalted;
His glory is above the earth and heaven.
14 And He has exalted the horn of His people,
The praise of all His saints—
Of the children of Israel,
A people near to Him.
Praise the Lord!
Here, the psalmist extends the call to all humanity—kings, princes, judges, young and old alike—urging everyone to praise God. His name is exalted above all, and His glory transcends the earth and heavens. The psalm concludes by highlighting God's special relationship with His people, Israel, noting that He has strengthened them and drawn them near to Him. All of creation, especially His chosen people, are encouraged to lift their voices in praise to the Lord.
