Psalm 87
Psalm 87 celebrates Zion, the city of God, highlighting its special place in God's plan and the honor it receives from all nations. The psalm looks forward to a time when people from many nations will be recognized as citizens of Zion, symbolizing the inclusion of all peoples in God’s kingdom.
Psalm 87:1-3 (NKJV)
1 His foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion
More than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are spoken of you,
O city of God! Selah
The psalmist emphasizes Zion as God's chosen foundation, nestled in the holy mountains. Although God blessed other parts of Israel, Zion holds a special place in His heart. It stands as a city of unique importance, a place where God’s presence dwells. The mention of "glorious things" points to the great promises and divine plans associated with Zion, foreshadowing the spiritual significance it will carry for the nations.
Psalm 87:4-6 (NKJV)
4 “I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to those who know Me;
Behold, O Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia:
‘This one was born there.’ ”
5 And of Zion it will be said,
“This one and that one were born in her;
And the Most High Himself shall establish her.”
6 The Lord will record,
When He registers the peoples:
“This one was born there.” Selah
God proclaims that even nations historically opposed to Israel, such as Rahab (Egypt) and Babylon, will come to know Him. The psalm describes a future in which people from enemy nations are recognized as citizens of Zion, symbolizing God's grace and the inclusion of all peoples in His covenant. This vision reflects the spiritual rebirth that occurs through faith, as those once far from God are now established in His kingdom. God Himself keeps a record of these new citizens, showing the personal care He has for each one.
Psalm 87:7 (NKJV)
7 Both the singers and the players on instruments say,
“All my springs are in you.”
The psalm closes with a picture of joy and celebration. Musicians and singers proclaim that all their blessings—symbolized by springs of life—are found in Zion. This signifies that Zion is not only a physical place but a spiritual source of life and joy. For believers, this points to the life-giving presence of God that flows from His city, a reminder that true joy and fulfillment come from being part of His kingdom.
